Short answer
Hard drives fail for many reasons: a manufacturing fault, shock and vibration from being carried in bags, bad sectors, firmware problems, or most commonly old age. Most drives we receive are about four to seven years old, and they fail through normal wear and tear, so it is often not your fault.
I have never dropped or damaged my hard drive. Why did it cease functioning?
Hard drives can cease functioning for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, it is simply due to a manufacturing fault.
On other occasions, individuals claim they have never dropped their hard drive, yet they fail to recognize that hard drives are not designed for portability. They are often transported in bags, such as handbags or laptop bags, where they are continuously shaken, moved, and bumped. Consequently, they incur damage from shock, vibration, and impact.
Other causes of hard drive malfunction include bad sectors, read errors, firmware corruption, and firmware design flaws. In my opinion, the most prevalent reason is simply old age. The majority of devices we receive here are approximately four or five years old. We very rarely encounter a three-month-old hard drive experiencing failure, unless it has been physically dislodged from a surface.
Therefore, it is not always your fault; things happen. Similar to dishwashers, televisions, or household showers, some items simply wear out, malfunction, or are poorly designed. They possess a designed life expectancy, much like a light bulb, functioning for a certain number of hours before ceasing to operate. From my experience, hard drives, if handled correctly, typically last around four years. The majority of those we examine are between four and seven years old, and they undoubtedly fail due to normal wear and tear.
