You will need your recovery key
BitLocker is strong encryption. Nobody can break it, and we don’t claim to. To recover your files we need your 48-digit BitLocker recovery key, or the password for a BitLocker To Go drive.
You can normally find your key in your Microsoft account. If the computer belongs to a business or school, your IT team can usually find it. Microsoft has a guide: Find your BitLocker recovery key.
If the key is lost and can’t be found, we can’t help with the encrypted data. Please check before you send your device.
How we recover a BitLocker drive
- Free assessment. We test the drive and find out what has failed.
- Repair or copy. Our data recovery engineers fix the hardware or firmware fault if needed, then make a full sector by sector clone copy of the drive. We work on the copy, not your original.
- Unlock with your key. We use your recovery key on the clone to unlock the BitLocker volume.
- Recover and deliver. Your files are copied onto a new external drive.
Before you pay for the recovery, we’ll send you a list of your recovered files so you can check them. If any of the files you listed are missing, tell us and we’ll search again.
Intel Optane: SSD works but BitLocker partition not found
We see this often with laptops that have an Intel Optane SSD (for example the Optane H10). The SSD still powers up and can be read, but the BitLocker partition can’t be found, so Windows won’t boot or ask for the key. Our approach works in many cases: we make a clone copy of the drive, then use your recovery key to unlock the copy and back up all of your data.
Please don’t remove the Optane drive or keep trying repairs. Turn the laptop off and contact us.

The cost depends on what’s wrong with the drive and how quickly you need your data back, not on BitLocker itself. We always offer a free assessment, and you get a written quote before we start any work.
About 90% of our jobs are no fix, no fee. The hardest 10% carry an attempt fee.
If your device is still under warranty, please get written approval from the manufacturer or retailer before you send it to us, because we may need to open it.

Can you recover my files without the recovery key?
No. Without the BitLocker recovery key or password the files can’t be read. Please find your key first.
Where do I find my recovery key?
In your Microsoft account, on a printout or USB stick you saved, or from your IT team.
Should I try to fix it myself first?
Please don’t. Turn the computer off and stop using it. Repeated repair attempts, especially on Optane drives, can make recovery harder.
