FAQ: What will you put the recovered data on?

Short answer

If you approve the quote, we offer an external USB hard drive or an external SSD, chosen to fit your data. If your drive failed from damaged heads we recommend an SSD, which is more durable but dearer, although most customers choose the hard drive for value. You can also supply your own drive if it is blank and has enough space.

What will you use for data storage?

By default, if we send you a quote and you approve it, we will provide two options. You can either purchase an external USB hard disk drive or an external solid-state drive (SSD) from us. We generally recommend purchasing these directly from us for convenience. We do not profit significantly from these sales. This allows us to select the appropriate storage size for your needs, whether it be 1 or 2 terabytes.

If your hard drive has failed due to damaged heads or another serious issue, we do not recommend purchasing another hard drive of the same type to avoid a recurrence of the problem. For such cases, we offer external SSDs. While more expensive, SSDs are more durable for individuals who travel frequently. Although they can fail for other reasons, the majority of our customers choose external hard drives due to their lower cost and better value.

We sell both types of drives and periodically change brands. We typically use what we consider entry-level, reliable hard drive brands. We try to avoid drives with features such as password protection or encryption, as these can introduce additional points of failure. We commonly sell Toshiba, Seagate, or Western Digital hard drives, and Samsung or SanDisk for solid-state drives. Alternatively, you may supply your own drive, provided it is blank, contains no other data, and has sufficient storage space for us to copy your files.
