A 2023 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro chip went to a black screen and would not power on, with a client deadline days away. In this MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro liquid damage data recovery case study, we traced an old spill to one blown capacitor, replaced it and saved 300GB of her work.
Case study summary
Client: A freelance designer in Sydney, NSW
Device: 2023 MacBook Pro 16-inch with the M2 Pro chip, storage soldered to the logic board
Problem: She opened it one morning to a black screen and no sign of life, with a client deadline days away
What we found: On a bench power supply it was not drawing the 20 volts it should. Under the back cover there was corrosion from an earlier liquid spill around the USB-C power circuit, and a short on a main 12 volt power route
What we did: Cleaned the corrosion, traced the short, found a blown capacitor smaller than a grain of rice with a thermal camera, then removed it and soldered in a new one under a microscope
Result: The board came back to life. 300GB of her work, over 600,000 files, was backed up and transferred to a new USB hard drive
Turnaround: About one week on Economy service. Priority and Emergency service are faster
Cost: Confirmed in the free written quote before any chargeable work
Apple: Payam Data Recovery is listed by Apple as a recommended data recovery provider
Service: MacBook data recovery

A Black Screen With a Client Deadline Days Away
The owner is a freelance designer in Sydney. One morning she opened her MacBook Pro and got a black screen. No sign of life. Her client work was on it, and the deadline was only days away.
This is a 2023 MacBook Pro 16-inch with the M2 Pro chip. On these MacBooks the storage is soldered to the logic board, so there is no drive to take out and plug into something else. The only way to the data is to get the original board working again.
So the job was never about fixing the laptop for everyday use. It was about getting that board to power up long enough to save her files.
The Problem: Why Won’t My MacBook Pro Turn On?
One of our data recovery engineers put the MacBook on a bench power supply first. A healthy MacBook Pro negotiates 20 volts from its charger. This one was not drawing the 20 volts it should, which pointed to a fault on the board itself rather than a flat battery or a bad charger.
Under the back cover he found the cause of the trouble: corrosion from an earlier liquid spill, sitting around the USB-C power circuit. The spill had not killed the MacBook straight away. Corrosion keeps working after the liquid has dried, and it can take weeks or months before a board gives up.
He cleaned the corrosion off. That was not enough. The board was still stuck at five volts, the level a charger supplies before a MacBook asks for full power.
The MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro Liquid Damage Data Recovery Process
A board stuck at five volts is refusing to take full power, and a common reason is a short circuit somewhere further in. The data recovery engineer traced a short on one of the main 12 volt power routes on the logic board.
Knowing which route is shorted still leaves hundreds of parts to choose from. To find the exact one, he used a thermal camera. A shorted part heats up when power is applied, and the camera shows that heat as a bright spot on the board. The culprit was a blown capacitor smaller than a grain of rice, sitting among hundreds of other components.
Under a microscope, he removed the damaged capacitor and soldered a new one in its place. This is component level work on a very dense board, and it is the reason a dead Apple silicon MacBook can still give up its data.
MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro Data Recovery Results
With the short gone, the board came back to life. The data recovery engineer backed up 300GB of her work, over 600,000 files, and transferred it all to a new USB hard drive.
She then received an email with a full file list and a video screen recording of her data, so she could see her files before anything else happened. She could collect the drive from our office or have it shipped back free of charge.
Her work came back on a separate drive, which is the outcome that matters when the laptop itself has been through a spill.
My MacBook Had a Spill Months Ago. Can the Data Still Be Recovered?
Often, yes. This case shows why an old spill is still worth taking seriously. The MacBook kept working after the liquid, then died without warning once the corrosion had done enough damage around the power circuit.
If your MacBook Pro will not turn on, shows a black screen, or has had a liquid spill, even months ago, leave it switched off. Repeatedly pressing the power button or plugging it into different chargers can push more current through a board that already has a short. A MacBook with soldered storage needs its own logic board to work, so the board is worth protecting.

Why People Choose Payam Data Recovery
When a MacBook will not start, its data is usually locked to its own chips, so those chips have to be working again before anything can be copied. That is the work we do every day.

Frequently Asked Questions
My MacBook Pro shows a black screen and will not turn on. Is my data gone?
Not necessarily. In this case the MacBook Pro showed no sign of life at all, and the cause was one blown capacitor on the power circuit. Once it was replaced the board powered up and 300GB of files were saved. Leave it switched off, do not keep trying chargers, and have it assessed.
The spill was months ago. Could it still be the cause?
Yes. On this MacBook the spill happened earlier and the laptop kept working. Corrosion around the USB-C power circuit carried on after the liquid dried, until the board would no longer take full power. So if your MacBook ever had a spill, tell us when you request a quote.
Can you just take the SSD out of my M2 Pro MacBook Pro?
No. On Apple silicon MacBooks, including the 2023 MacBook Pro 16-inch with the M2 Pro chip, the storage is soldered to the logic board and tied to the Mac’s own chip. There is no drive to remove. The data is reached by getting the original board working again.
Will you repair my MacBook so I can use it again?
The work is aimed at your data, not at returning the MacBook for daily use. The board repair is done so the files can be backed up. Your data comes back on a new USB hard drive, with a full file list and a video screen recording of your data before you collect it.
How long does MacBook liquid damage data recovery take?
Economy service usually takes about a week from when the MacBook reaches the lab. Priority and Emergency service are faster, which helps when you have a client deadline. The turnaround options and prices are set out in your free quote, so you can choose the one that fits your deadline before any chargeable work.
If you cannot recover my data, is there nothing to pay?
Yes. The assessment and quote are free, and for most faults there is nothing to pay unless we recover your data. See your files before you pay. You tell us which files matter most. Before you pay for the recovery, we’ll send you a list of your recovered files so you can check them. If any of the files you listed are missing, tell us and we’ll search again. The one exception is cleanroom and other high risk work, where part of the quoted price is a non-refundable attempt fee paid upfront so we can begin. That covers the data recovery engineer time and donor parts we commit whatever the outcome. If an attempt fee applies to your job, it will be stated clearly in your quote before you approve anything.
Will taking my MacBook to you affect Apple service later?
Apple lists Payam Data Recovery as one of three recommended data recovery providers. Apple’s page states it will not exclude warranty coverage because a company it recommends modified the product during data recovery. The cost of the recovery itself is not covered by the Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare.
I am overseas. Can I send my MacBook to you?
Yes. International customers are always welcome. Request a free quote first, then send the MacBook once you are happy with the next step, and the recovered data comes back to you on a drive. The easiest way to reach us from overseas is by email at help@payam.com.au, which works in every time zone.
