Short answer

In most cases, yes. These faults are usually read errors or bad sectors on a failing drive, and further repair attempts can corrupt the file system and lose folder and file names. Safely eject it, leave it powered off and bring it in for a free assessment. We clone it sector by sector and recover from the clone without repairing the partition.

I have tried first aid in disk utility to give access to my external drive. However, it shows DC 2S1. Will my drive be recoverable from this?

The answer is yes, in most cases. The majority of issues we observe of this nature are typically caused by read errors or bad sectors on a failing drive. Therefore, I would advise against further repair attempts, as this may lead to data corruption within the file system. This could result in the loss of folder and file name structures, even if recovery is successful. It is best not to tamper with the drive if the data is important. Safely eject it, leave it powered off, and allow us to assess it free of charge. We will examine it for you. We will test it for read errors or SMART status warnings and then create a sector-by-sector clone using specialized hardware. Subsequently, using professional data recovery tools, we will read from your drive and save the data to a new disk without making any modifications or attempting to repair the partition or volume. Once such repairs are attempted, they are irreversible and can cause all data to become scrambled, corrupted, or result in the loss of file names. We can certainly assist with this. If the data is important, please bring it in for a free assessment and quote.
