Short answer
Usually yes, and these are among our highest success rate jobs. A common cause is plugging in the wrong power supply, such as a laptop charger, which can damage the drive’s circuit board. The board’s fuses and diodes generally protect the drive inside, so we usually repair or replace the board, drawing on over 30,000 donor parts. Start with a free assessment and quote.
These instances typically represent some of our highest success rates in data recovery, often resolving complex issues with relative ease.
This situation commonly arises when an incompatible power supply is connected to an external drive. For example, if a laptop charger or another unsuitable power adapter is mistakenly plugged into the external drive’s power input, it can supply excessive power to the drive.
Indicators of this issue may include a burning odor or a blinking light on the power supply that was previously stable. These symptoms suggest damage to the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) or circuit board of the hard drive.
Fortunately, circuit boards are equipped with protective fuses or diodes, which generally prevent internal damage to the drive. Therefore, our approach usually involves either a temporary repair of the circuit board or its replacement with a compatible unit. Our inventory currently includes over 30,000 donor parts, including around 20,000 donor hard drives.
Upon receiving your device, we will conduct a complimentary assessment and provide a quotation. We will thoroughly test the device to diagnose the problem and offer a price. Should you approve the quotation, we will proceed to back up and copy all data to a new drive for you.
