Short answer

Normally no, unless the file is still in the Trash. Modern MacBooks use the APFS file system with Trim and encryption, which makes accidentally deleted data very difficult for anyone to recover. First check iCloud for a backup, then the Trash, and try undo if the deletion was recent.

My data has been erased on my MacBook Pro. Can it be recovered? The answer is normally no, unless it is residing in the recycle bin or trash folder. Apple MacBooks and systems utilizing Apple APFS file systems employ Trim and encryption, rendering accidental deletion impossible for data recovery and computer forensic companies to retrieve. Previously, with HFS file systems, we were able to recover deleted data, though file names and folder names were often lost. However, we could retrieve files such as photos and PDFs. With modern MacBooks, if the device is operating on the latest operating system and utilizing an onboard SSD or a removable NVMe SSD, the recovery of deleted data is generally not possible.

While numerous software and tools exist, and many companies advertise their ability to recover data, we generally find that they cannot bring back data deleted on a modern MacBook. Therefore, if an individual contacts us stating they have deleted a file from their desktop, our recommendation would be to first check iCloud for a backup. If it is not on iCloud, then check the recycle bin. It may also be possible to right-click and select “undo” if the action was recent. However, if the device were brought to us, after running various data recovery software, we would typically conclude that the data is no longer present. This is due to known factors such as Trim, secure erasing, and encryption, which optimize the SSD and fill sectors with zeros.
