Case Study Summary
- Device: iPhone 11
- Problem: Black screen and would not turn on
- Diagnosis: Short circuit inside the dual layer logic board
- Repair step: Logic board separation to trace the short
- Outcome: Phone powered on and data became accessible again
This iPhone 11 black screen case study follows a device that would not turn on and showed only a black screen.
The customer first went to an Apple Store and was then referred for data recovery because the phone would not power on.
The Problem: iPhone 11 Black Screen and No Power
The iPhone 11 showed no signs of turning on, and the display remained black. In the video, the issue was diagnosed as an electrical short on the motherboard.
iPhone 11 Black Screen Case Study Diagnosis and Repair
The iPhone 11 uses a dual layer logic board design, which is essentially two circuit boards sandwiched together.
Because the short could not be located initially, the two layers were carefully separated to isolate the fault.
In the video explanation, the bottom layer handles networking functions, while the upper layer contains the CPU and storage memory.
After splitting the layers, the short was confirmed on the CPU side.
Through further tracing, the fault was found in a component called the display boost IC, which supplies power to the screen.
Because it was buried deep within the board layers, separation was required to access it.
Result: Data Access Restored
After the display boost IC was replaced, the iPhone 11 came back to life and the customer data became accessible again.
This is the outcome shown in the video for this iPhone 11 black screen case study.
Why Component Level iPhone Data Recovery Matters
A dead iPhone with a black screen can involve faults hidden inside multi layer logic boards.
When the fault is inside the board layers, finding it can require board separation and microscope level repair work.
Why People Choose Payam Data Recovery
When an iPhone will not start, its data is locked to its own chips, so those chips have to be working again before anything can be copied. That is the work we do every day.
- We are a specialist data recovery lab, not a phone repair shop. We have been recovering data since 1998, from over 300,000 devices.
- We are listed on Apple’s data recovery provider page, one of three recommended data recovery providers.
- 500 mobile phone repair shops and over 2,000 IT companies and computer shops across Australia send us their customers’ complex cases every year.
- Board level repair under the microscope by our own data recovery engineers, here in Australia and never outsourced overseas.
- Your data stays private. Our data recovery engineers open only a few random, non-sensitive files to check the recovery worked, and we can sign an NDA on request.
- Rated 4.9 from over 2,400 Google reviews.
We are not the cheapest. We are the best in Australia at this work. We know what to do, how to do it, and we will do our very best for you. Your best chance of getting your data back is with us.
Mobile phone and tablet data recovery service

Frequently asked questions
My iPhone screen is black and it will not turn on. Is the screen the problem?
Not always. On this iPhone 11 the display itself was fine. The fault was an electrical short on the motherboard, which is why nothing appeared on screen and the phone would not start.
Apple could not help and referred me on. What does that mean?
It usually means the machine needs board level work rather than a standard repair. This customer went to an Apple Store first and was referred for data recovery because the phone would not power on.
What is a dual layer logic board?
Two circuit boards sandwiched together. On the iPhone 11 the lower layer handles networking and the upper layer holds the CPU and the storage memory. The two are joined, which is what makes faults between them so hard to find.
Why did the board have to be separated?
Because the short could not be located while the layers were joined. Splitting them isolated the fault, and it was confirmed on the CPU side. It is delicate work and it is not something a standard repair shop attempts.
What does iPhone data recovery cost, and when do I pay?
Phones and tablets are always no fix, no fee. There is no attempt fee, and you see your files before you pay. The service is a fixed price. Contact us for a free quote and we will confirm the price and the turnaround options.

Customers around Australia come to Payam Data Recovery daily with issues just like this. And today was no different.
Hey, it’s Mike and today I am sitting with skilled data technician Weey, who walked me through an interesting repair of an iPhone 11 experiencing this very problem.
The customer had previously taken the phone to the Apple store first, but Apple referred them to Payam for data recovery because the phone simply wouldn’t turn on.
When we began his diagnosis, he discovered something called a short on the motherboard. But here’s where it got really interesting.
He couldn’t immediately locate where this electrical problem was hiding. The iPhone 11 has what’s called a double layer motherboard, which is essentially two circuit boards sandwiched together.
So, we had to carefully split these layers apart. Imagine separating two pieces of paper that are glued together, except these contain thousands of microscopic circuits.
The bottom layer handles networking functions, while the upper layer contains the CPU and storage memory.
Even after splitting the layers, the short was still there on the CPU side.
Through meticulous detective work, we traced the problem to a tiny component called the display boost IC.
Basically, a power chip that supplies electricity to the screen.
This component was buried deep inside the motherboard layers, which explained why the separation was necessary.
After replacing this microscopic chip, we’re talking about components smaller than a grain of rice, the iPhone 11 came back to life.
All that customer data, those photos and videos, capturing precious memories that seem lost forever were suddenly accessible again.
Sometimes saving your memories means going layer by layer, component by component, until you find that one tiny piece that’s causing the problem.
Thanks for watching.
