When your WD MyBook external hard drive stops working after a fall or impact, you’re not just facing a technical problem-you’re experiencing a potential personal or business crisis. Those irreplaceable family photos, crucial business documents, and years of digital memories suddenly become inaccessible. As Australia’s leading data recovery specialists with over 27 years of experience, we understand the panic and urgency you’re feeling right now.

Has your WD MyBook suddenly failed after being dropped? The most important step is to STOP using it immediately. Contact our Australian data recovery team at 1300 444 800 or Get a Free Assessment today from any of our six locations across Australia.

Common Signs Your WD MyBook Needs Professional Recovery

WD MyBook drives are generally reliable storage solutions, but they contain sensitive mechanical components that can be instantly damaged through physical impact. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms after dropping your drive, professional data recovery is likely your only option:

  • Clicking or Ticking Sounds - Often called the “click of death,” this indicates damaged read/write heads attempting to function
  • Drive Not Recognised by Computer - Your PC or Mac no longer detects the drive when connected via USB
  • Drive Powers On But Isn’t Accessible - LEDs light up, but no data appears
  • Grinding or Scraping Noises - Clear indicators of internal mechanical damage
  • Intermittent Connection - Drive appears and disappears from your computer randomly
  • Complete Silence - No spin-up sounds at all when powered

If you’re experiencing these symptoms with your WD MyBook in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide or anywhere else in Australia, immediate professional assessment is critical for successful data recovery.

Why DIY Recovery Methods Fail for Physically Damaged WD MyBook Drives

Many Australian WD MyBook owners attempt common troubleshooting steps that can permanently destroy their data. Online “solutions” often suggest dangerous methods that might work for logical failures but are devastating for physical damage cases:

WARNING: Avoid These Harmful DIY Attempts

  • Freezing the Drive - This outdated method causes condensation damage and makes recovery harder
  • Opening the Drive Enclosure - Exposing internal components outside a laminar flow cabinet guarantees further damage
  • Repeated Restarting - Each power cycle with damaged heads causes additional platter scratches
  • Software Recovery Tools - These can’t fix physical damage and often make it worse
  • Tapping or Shaking the Drive - This never works and often causes additional internal damage

The Science Behind WD MyBook Physical Damage

Understanding what happens inside your WD MyBook when it’s dropped helps explain why professional recovery is essential:

  • Precision Components - Modern hard drives operate with microscopic tolerances measured in nanometres
  • Head Crashes - Read/write heads normally float on a cushion of air just 3-5 nanometres above the platters; impact causes them to contact the platters
  • Platter Damage - The magnetic disks storing your data spin at 5,400-7,200 RPM and can be scratched by head contact
  • Mechanical Precision - Even slight misalignment of internal components can render the entire system inoperable

When physical damage occurs, your data remains on the platters but becomes inaccessible through normal means. Professional recovery involves bypassing damaged components to safely extract this data.

Real Recovery Stories from Australian WD MyBook Owners

★★★★★

Wedding Photographer’s Nightmare Resolved

“My 8TB WD MyBook with a complete wedding shoot fell from my desk the day before delivery deadline. Complete panic! The Payam team in Sydney worked through the night on emergency service and recovered EVERY SINGLE IMAGE. They explained that the read/write heads had been damaged but they were able to restore everything with their laminar flow cabinet equipment. I now recommend them to every photographer I know.”

- James T., Professional Photographer, Sydney

★★★★★

Family Photos Rescued After Toddler Accident

“Our 3-year-old knocked our WD MyBook off the shelf, and it started making clicking sounds. Ten years of family photos and videos were on that drive with no backup. The Melbourne Payam team was incredibly understanding of our distress and kept us updated throughout the process. They recovered everything, even photos I thought we’d lost years ago. Their free assessment gave us clarity on costs upfront, and the actual recovery was completed faster than estimated.”

- Sarah M., Melbourne

★★★★★

Business Data Saved After Office Accident

“During office renovations, our 6TB WD MyBook with critical client data was knocked off a temporary shelf. It wouldn’t be recognised by any computer afterwards. The Perth Payam team not only recovered 100% of our data but also provided a detailed explanation of the internal damage and recovery process. Their professionalism and transparent communication throughout gave us complete confidence. Worth every dollar for the peace of mind alone.”

- Robert J., Business Owner, Perth

PhD Research Recovered From Damaged Drive

“My WD MyBook with four years of PhD research was accidentally knocked off my desk and stopped working completely. I was absolutely devastated. After being told by another recovery service it was probably unrecoverable, Payam’s Brisbane team achieved what seemed impossible. Not only did they recover all my research data, but they did it within their standard service timeframe and cost. Their engineers explained exactly what had happened to the drive and why their specialised equipment could succeed where others failed.”

- Dr. Michael L., Brisbane

I am pleased to thank very much the team at Payam Data Recovery for the excellent manner in which they handled the recovery of much of my "lost" data from a corrupted external hard drive. Their email communications were much appreciated as they helped me understand my first data recovery experience. I now have 2 copies of the retrieved data. I have started the process of placing the retrieved data back together with the data which was not lost. Thank you for your professionalism.

Life savers ! My son’s Macbook just stopped working one day. Apple (who were excellent to be fair) said she was dead and would be an $1800 repair (new logic board). My sons also did not have his documents backed up (yeah yeah I know - but sometimes you forget). In comes Payam to the rescue. Superb pre and post sale service. They performed amazing internal surgery on his Mac and retrieved the mission critical data for us. As the drives in these Mac’s are hardwired to the motherboard they could’ve be removed so the surgeons at Payam had to perform open heart surgery to get my son’s data back. All 23 GBs were returned on a new Toshiba hard drive and posted back to us in less then 5 days. If you have important data and no back up - these guys are your answer. Wasn’t cheap but we didn’t have a choice this time. Awesome work - highly recommend them

We were in some real strife. Our laptop battery exploded and melted half the computer; no service centres would even open it to try to retrieve the hard drive - eventually someone recommended Payam to us, and after all the distress of thinking we'd lost all our data (family pictures in particular), Wes took one look at it and within a week we had everything back. Incredible. Thank you. Highly professional service, well worth the cost for us.

After accidentally deleting the wrong photos folder off my laptop, my external hard drive and then emptying the trash to free up space, I was in hysterics. I thought I had a backup folder on my hard drive, but turns out this backup folder didn’t have everything on it. I deleted years worth of photos, 18th birthday, 21st birthday, multiple Christmas’s, so much more. I tried everything myself and then went into the Apple Store and they were pretty convinced there wasn’t much hope and they’d be gone forever. I was given a card for Payam Data Recovery as a last hope. I had a call from Scott and he was 100% realistic that the deleted files/photos may not be able to be recovered but they might be too. I was beyond excited when the recovery job had finished and my over 100GB of photos had been retrieved. Payam were very prompt with communication and to help with any queries along the way. Even after everything, I had an issue with the hard drive, Scott took it back in straight away and fixed it all up. The payment plans are also really great. Thank you so much Payam for saving all of my precious photos and memories!

Tried several places to retrieve footage from my video camera's hard drive with no success. Referred to Payam by Sony and the job was completed with a great level of communication , service and outcome. Thank you to the technician who met us in the Sydney CBD office. You were very nice and confident that you could resolve our problem, which Payam did.

I thought 20 years of my life in photos and videos were potentially gone forever but Payam recovered the 94,456 photos / videos on my HD elements hard drive after what turned out to be a firmware issue. Two other businesses had looked at it prior but did not have the technology/ capabilities to diagnose or help so although I was hopeful I just didn’t know what to expect the third time around when sending my hard drive in the post to Payam. I really cannot thank Payam Data Recovery enough! No words would or will do. Beyond grateful. Ps: I went with the option to get my data backed up on two hard drives by Payam. I highly recommended choosing this option too.

Fantastic service from these guys. Called a few times as was uncertain on a few things and so lovely and helpful every time. I had taken my external hard drive to two local companies that were unsuccessful in recover data, should have send to Payam first and saved time and money. They were able to recover all the data from the hard drive, gave me access to view it before paying and having sent back. Couldn’t be happier with their service and will recommend them to everyone!!

After our computer dying unexpectedly, we took it into the store to see if they could repair it. The removed the hard drive but not the SSD which we much later learned we needed to retrieve our files. Payam managed to retrieve most. Due to the computer corporation’s incorrect response in this matter, what should have been a straight forward process ended up being incredibly frustrating. We are very grateful to the Payam team for their expertise and efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions About WD MyBook Physical Damage Recovery

Why did my WD MyBook drive die?

WD MyBook drives typically fail due to one of two main causes. First is natural ageing, which usually occurs after about 5-7 years of regular use (or longer if you’re lucky). The second and more common cause we see is physical shock or impact damage. Even a relatively minor drop can cause internal component failures due to the precision engineering inside these drives. Other factors that can contribute to failure include power surges, manufacturing defects, and excessive heat exposure. Regardless of the cause, the most important step once you notice a problem is to immediately stop using the drive to prevent further damage.

What problems do you see most often with WD MyBook drives?

In our Australian recovery labs, the most common WD MyBook issues we encounter include: bad sectors and read errors that progressively worsen over time; system area or firmware corruption that prevents the drive from initialising properly; damaged PCB (printed circuit board) components from power surges or physical impacts; partition corruption or file system damage making data inaccessible; and damaged read/write heads resulting from drops or impacts. The prevalence of these issues is why we’ve developed specialised equipment and techniques specifically for WD drives, allowing us to achieve our high success rates even with severely damaged drives.

How much does WD MyBook data recovery cost in Australia?

Data recovery costs for WD MyBook drives typically range from $375 to $2,000, depending on the specific problem identified during our assessment. Generally, the easier and quicker it is for us to recover your data, the more affordable the service will be. Complex recoveries requiring parts replacement or extensive work in the laminar flow cabinet fall at the higher end of the spectrum. We always provide a completely free assessment and detailed quote before any work begins, explaining the exact problem, chances of successful recovery, and precise costs involved, allowing you to make an informed decision about whether the recovery is worth it for your specific situation.

Will you look at my personal files during the recovery process?

No, we maintain a very strict privacy policy throughout our recovery process. While our work may occasionally require testing random files to verify that they open correctly and are not damaged, we always respect your privacy at all times. Our technicians are trained to test the minimum number of files necessary to confirm recovery success, and we never browse through personal content. Our sole focus is recovering your data and returning it to you securely-we have strict protocols in place to ensure client confidentiality is maintained at all our Australian facilities.

Is data recovery still possible if my WD MyBook makes loud clicking noises?

Yes, clicking noises typically indicate damaged read/write heads, which our engineers can address in our laminar flow cabinet. This is actually one of the most common issues we successfully resolve with WD MyBook drives. The critical factor is to stop using the drive immediately when you hear these sounds, as continued operation causes additional damage to the platters where your data is stored.

How does your Australian WD MyBook recovery service compare to sending my drive overseas?

Our Australian-based recovery service offers several significant advantages: substantially faster turnaround times without international shipping delays, local customer service in your time zone, compliance with Australian privacy and data protection standards, and the security of knowing exactly where your drive is throughout the process. Additionally, our six locations across Australia mean you can either visit in person or have much shorter shipping times than international options.

Can you recover data if my WD MyBook was dropped and won’t power on at all?

Absolutely. A WD MyBook that won’t power on after being dropped could have several issues: damaged circuit board components, disconnected internal connections, or mechanical seizure of internal parts. Our assessment process identifies the specific problem, and we have solutions for all these scenarios. In fact, drives that don’t power on often have less platter damage than those that continued to run after impact, sometimes making recovery more straightforward.

Why choose Payam for WD MyBook recovery in Australia?

As Australia’s longest-established data recovery specialists (operating since 1998), we offer unique advantages for WD MyBook recovery: laminar flow cabinets in our labs across Australia, engineers with specific training in Western Digital drive architecture, proprietary recovery techniques developed specifically for impact-damaged drives, and an industry-leading 97.3% success rate. With thousands of successful WD MyBook recoveries completed, we have the expertise to handle even the most challenging cases.
