Case study graphic: Samsung 500GB Clicking, 310GB Back

Samsung hard drive data recovery case study documents a real recovery performed for Ben from Melbourne after his external Samsung hard drive was accidentally dropped and began making clicking sounds. The drive was no longer accessible and contained important personal data.

Understanding the Samsung Hard Drive Clicking Noise

After the drop, Ben’s Samsung hard drive immediately began making clicking sounds. As explained in the video, clicking is a clear sign that the read and write heads have been damaged. These components operate extremely close to the platter surface, and physical shock can cause instant failure.

If a hard drive starts clicking, the correct action is to power it off immediately. Continued use can cause the damaged heads to scratch the platters, leading to permanent data loss.

The video also explains that Samsung’s hard drive business was acquired by Seagate, which is why many Samsung drives are found inside Seagate enclosures. This is confirmed in Seagate’s official acquisition announcement.

Professional Samsung Hard Drive Diagnosis

The senior data recovery engineer examined the drive inside a laminar flow cabinet. Testing confirmed that the read and write heads were damaged, but the platters themselves were still in good condition. This meant the data was recoverable using professional laminar flow cabinet techniques.

Filtered air is essential for mechanical hard drive recovery, as even microscopic dust particles can permanently damage exposed platters.

Samsung Hard Drive Data Recovery Process

The video shows that Payam Data Recovery maintains over 30,000 donor parts. Using this inventory, the data recovery engineer located compatible donor heads matching the exact model and specifications of Ben’s Samsung drive.

Inside the laminar flow cabinet, a delicate head swap procedure was performed. Once the drive was stabilised, data recovery engineers were able to safely access the data and complete the recovery process.

  • Immediate power down after clicking started
  • Diagnosis by a senior data recovery engineer
  • Compatible donor heads sourced from in house inventory
  • Precision head replacement performed

Samsung Hard Drive Data Recovery Results

The recovery was successful. The drive was able to function long enough for data extraction, and all 310GB of Ben’s data was recovered. This included family photos, documents, and personal files.

The video states that Payam Data Recovery has an approximate 85 percent success rate for mechanical hard drive failures of this type. The entire recovery process took three business days.

Pricing for this type of Samsung hard drive data recovery depends on how urgently the data is needed, and is confirmed in the free written quote. Current prices are on our hard drive data recovery page.

Preventing Future Hard Drive Failures

To reduce the risk of data loss, the video recommends following the 3 2 1 backup strategy:

  1. Keep three copies of your data
  2. Store data on two different storage devices
  3. Keep one copy off site, such as cloud storage

Why People Choose Payam Data Recovery

A failed hard drive needs an experienced data recovery engineer, and often a matching donor part. We work on 10 to 15 drives with failed heads every day.

  • We are a specialist data recovery lab, not a computer repair shop. We have been recovering data since 1998, from over 300,000 devices.
  • The best equipped data recovery lab in Australia: an ISO 5 certified laminar flow cabinet for head replacements, an anti-static lab, microscopes and microsoldering stations for circuit board work, the Ace Lab PC-3000, Atola Insight Forensic and DeepSpar Disk Imager, and over 30,000 donor parts, including around 20,000 donor hard drives. When your drive needs a matching part, it is usually already on our shelf.
  • Over 2,000 IT companies and computer shops across Australia send us their customers’ complex cases, and data recovery labs and IT companies in more than 50 countries have sent us their difficult cases over the past ten years.
  • Rated 4.9 from over 2,400 Google reviews.
  • About 90% of our jobs are no fix, no fee. The hardest 10% carry an attempt fee.
  • See your files before you pay. You tell us which files matter most. Before you pay for the recovery, we’ll send you a list of your recovered files so you can check them. If any of the files you listed are missing, tell us and we’ll search again.
  • Pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link or PayPal, split the cost with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4, or pay by bank deposit (EFT).
  • Everything is done in our own labs in Australia and never outsourced overseas. Call or visit us, and you can speak with the data recovery engineers who do the work.

We are not the cheapest. We are the best in Australia at this work. We know what to do, how to do it, and we will do our very best for you. Your best chance of getting your data back is with us.

Frequently asked questions

My external drive started clicking after I dropped it. What does that mean?
The read and write heads are damaged. They fly extremely close to the platter surface, so a physical shock can break them instantly. Clicking is the sound of the drive trying and failing to read.

What should I do the moment it starts clicking?
Power it off and leave it off. Every further attempt risks the damaged heads scratching the platters, and a scratched platter is the one kind of damage that can make data permanently unrecoverable.

Can the data still be recovered once the heads are damaged?
Usually, if the platters are undamaged. On Ben’s drive the heads had failed but the platters were still in good condition, so everything was recovered.

Why does the work have to be done in filtered air?
Because the drive has to be opened. A single dust particle on a platter is enough to destroy the new heads and scratch the surface, so the drive is opened in filtered air rather than on a bench.

My drive says Samsung but I have read it is a Seagate. Which is it?
Both, in a sense. Samsung’s hard drive business was acquired by Seagate, which is why many Samsung branded drives are found in Seagate enclosures or use Seagate internals. It affects which donor parts are needed.

What does hard drive recovery cost, and when do I pay?
Every hard drive starts with a free assessment, then a written quote with Economy, Priority and Emergency service levels. Where an attempt fee applies it is stated in your quote before you approve anything, and it forms part of the total price. Before the final payment you receive a complete file list and a video preview so you can check the quality first.

Hey there, it’s Mike back at Payam Data Recovery with a case study about Ben, a Melbourne customer, and his dead Samsung hard drive. Ben dropped his external drive and it started making clicking sounds, a clear sign the read and write heads were damaged. I watched the senior data recovery engineer diagnose this 500GB Samsung drive in their lab. If your drive clicks, power it off immediately. Continued use risks scratching the platters permanently. The data recovery engineer found this was a Samsung drive in a Seagate enclosure, which is very common. While the heads were damaged, the platters were fine. Payam Data Recovery has an 85 percent success rate with these mechanical failures. Using an inventory of over 30,000 donor parts, compatible donor heads were found and a delicate head swap was performed. The result was that Ben’s drive came back to life and all 310GB of data was recovered. The process took three business days and cost between $1,750 to $3,500 AUD depending on urgency. To prevent data loss, follow the 3 2 1 backup rule. Payam Data Recovery serves all of Australia with offices and secure drop off locations, plus international mailing services.
