The main board on my notebook computer collapsed while I was working overseas.  It was not able to be repaired.  I was not unduly worried as I knew that I would be able to recover all the data off my hard disk and transfer it to a new computer.

Unfortunately it was not quite as easy as that.  I was able to transfer most of my files but some key files could not be recovered.  It turned out that some files were encrypted and there was nothing that I could do to get access to the data, which included all the files needed to file my BAS return.  A few years earlier, while working on a special contract, my notebook computer had been set up as the master computer in a small network we established so that the others in the team could access our printer. 

My computer had had encryption placed on the files to ensure their security.  The encryption was removed when the network was dismantled.  What I did not realise was that the encryption remained on a number of the pre-existing files. When I returned to Australia with my non-functioning computer, the repairer suggested that Payam might be able to recover my data for me. 

I took my hard disk to Payam to see what they could do for me.  A couple of hours later they rang to say that they had recovered all my data, apart from a couple of inconsequential files.  That was wonderful news as I was not relishing the prospect of attempting to reconstruct all my inadvertently encrypted files. 

Payam gave me a CD with all the data files from my hard disk and I was able to transfer them to my new computer without any problems.

The recovery process was very straightforward for Payam, as my hard disk contained the encryption algorithm, and they were able to access that algorithm.  I might have been able to do something similar had I been able to find an identical computer to my non-working notebook computer, already an obsolete model, with an identical operating system, and install my hard disk on that computer. 

That was an uncertain and highly stressful undertaking, so I was extremely relieved that Payam had a straightforward process to access my encrypted data.  Needless to say, I have made sure that the encryption has been turned off on my new notebook computer.

After six months intensive work cutting and adding visual effects to a film in Final Cut Pro, with the premiere screening less than a week away, I had one more effects shot to finish before outputting to DVD.  Four hours of footage, amounting to over 200GB of disk space, was stored on my trusty Lacie external drive -- too much to back up without the expense of buying another drive.  What false economy this turned out to be!

Suddenly up came a window telling me the drive was no longer readable by my computer.  Running disk repair was instantly useless.  I tried restarting and reopening everything.  Still no recognition.  It was a Saturday night, and the screening was to be on Wednesday.  I was rooted.

I got no sleep that night. The word 'disaster' echoed in my head.  I felt so guilty.  I could end my career.  I would be letting scores of people down.

Monday at 830 I called my Mac repair store and rushed in the dead Lacie.
Within five minutes they knew they could do nothing.  But they handed me Payam's website and phone number.

It was like calling a hospital emergency department when I spoke to Payam himself.  Calmly he put my mind at ease, making no unrealistic promises but giving me just enough hope and confidence to keep me breathing.  This man clearly knew his stuff.  In went the injured drive, and for the next two days I waited in suspense.  Like a newly pregnant woman not yet sure of my baby's health, I told the producers of my film nothing.  They'd only need to know in the event of a disaster.  I dared not even think about it.

Of course I couldn't believe my ears when Payam from Payam called and told me my data had been retrieved with 100% success.  My fingers are shaking as I type even recalling it.  I felt so grateful.  The relief was indescribable.
The disk itself was of course damaged beyond repair, but I took the cost of its replacement as getting off lightly.

The film met its deadline and was rapturously received and all's well that ends well.  But it could have been so different!  My deepest thanks to Payam.  I hope I never have to call upon them again, but if I have another crash, their number's backed up on at least 3 CDs!

In 2005 my wife and I spent seven months driving through China and India our Land-Rover camper van.  As we took digital photos we downloaded them onto our laptop computer.  But then we started to run out of space on the hard drive, so I burnt the photos of the first part of the trip to DVD and deleted them from the computer.

One of my hobbies is tracing my family history (i.e., genealogy) and I had detailed information relating to over 1,500 people stored on my computer. Like many of us I guess, we take for granted that the hard drive is only a year or two old and surely it won’t fail for some time yet.  I had mine “just stop” one weekend recently and I recalled seeing an advertisement in “PC User Magazine” regarding data recovery.

A quick phone call and the drive was dropped off for analysis, a report regarding the possible recovery of data was provided the following morning and the data itself burned onto DVD’s and returned with the hard drive the following week.

Despite having network storage and additional hard drives available I hadn’t got around to setting that up.

With our digital camera memory card close to full (over 350 photos) I checked the available space and accidentally reformatted the memory card effectively deleting all of our precious photos.  Everyone told us they were lost forever and to give up.  

A few years earlier my work hard drive crashed and the back up tapes were unreadable so we used Payam to get the data back. 

I went to their web site and found Payam also recover photos from memory cards.  We were extremely happy to hear that many of photos were recovered perfectly and of those that were corrupted we were able to crop and zoom on the digital photo printer to save more.

Definitely give them a try – with a no charge policy if they can’t recover your photo’s you’ve got nothing to lose!

After upgrading to Vista our spare HD with all of our photos, videos, files suddenly crashed. I took the HD out of the desktop and brought it into work for the IT guys to check out.

In the process the unit was knocked off my desk and the IT guys couldn't get the disk to mount at all. Looked around for ages on the internet and must have called a half dozen firms for indicative quotes.

Was shocked to hear the cost $1,500+ so when I came across the 'economy' service offering at PAYAM , I went over to chat it through with them and was greatly re-assured so left it for an evaluation.

One day you are working happily on your current documents. the next your hard disk tells you that it is empty. The feeling is of complete shock. Nothing there at all? Nothing? Well of course there are back ups, just not recently. Not for several months, in fact.

Recently this happened to me. I fled to my computer retailer, who have a service section but, I discovered, don't touch data loss. I was relieved when they gave me the name of a firm in St Kilda Road who, they told me, were the experts in this field.

And so I came to Payam. I arrived in shock and left feeling more optimistic. By the next day we had files and documents, graphics and data bases. Another day and I had my hard drive re-configured with all the recovered data ready for use. A few documents were missing, a few were corrupted, but I had back-ups and hard copies to cushion the loss.

We run an accommodation business which relies on a computerised reservation system.  Without any prior indication we suffered a catastrophic hard drive failure with a very busy period coming up.

The best laid backup processes aren’t always enough. I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro after another software program had unexpectedly caused corruption. I had a full system backup on an external drive and a secondary internal drive contained My Documents on one of 5 partitions.

Because of the corruption I chose not to use the system backup to rebuild. I followed all of the procedures found on the Microsoft web site only to find that the reinstallation had unexpectedly ‘wiped’ the partitioning on my secondary hard drive.

In consequence, I could not access My Documents which contained many important personal and business folders. I followed up an advertisement in PC User Magazine about Payam Data Recovery.

When we were faced with a hard drive of a client dying, we weren’t that concerned as all data was supposed to be on the server. As it turned out, the folder their QA guy had set up was on her C drive. The client had thought this was a secure folder and loaded all the company’s sensitive and most important documents into it as well.

Combine this with the banking information and it was a disaster. We tried all of our specialised recovery software and got absolutely nowhere.

Being an IT advocate, everything I have is stored on my computer. Every document I've ever compiled, every letter I've ever written, every photo I've ever taken, and every memory I've ever had. A number of weeks ago, I noticed a suboptimal performance in my boss's laptop. After my hard drive screamed CORRUPTION and do not enter I quickly went into cardiac arrest. The LaCie external USB drive we had contained about 300 GB of irreplaceable voice recordings. We thought that we had a copy of them on some tapes, but when the LaCie drive became inaccessible we went to restore them we found that the tapes were not working properly, and we could not recover the data from them.

The voice recordings contained important insurance verbal contracts and so it was vital to be able to recover them.

I have been backing up files to CDs since 1998. The burnt files include complex quarry plans created with geological software. I regularly recall these plans for updating. However, I discovered recently that 3 of my back up CDs would not open, even though they had opened up before.

Our IT Dept recommended PAYAM Data Recovery as a company who could possibly open the CDs for me and recover the data. I took the CDs in to PAYAM along with one that would open, as an example of the sort of data I needed to recover.

PAYAM were successful in recovering the data from 2 of the 3 disks, burning the data for me onto new CDs. All the data was intact and could be opened in the geological software for further use. Whilst it would have been good to recover the data from the third disk, the main data I urgently needed was on the CDs recovered, so the exercise was worthwhile and worth the cost of recovery.

It was thought that the reason I couldn't open the 3 CDS was that when the data was originally burnt, the process was not correctly finalised. In future we will close off a back up session and start a new CD for new data. CDs are so cheap it is worth the small expense and slightly extra storage to save parcels of data to separate CDs.

After a full day photo shoot, we tried to download the images from a newly purchased microdrive card.  The card had worked fine all day, but didn't want to mount on any of our computers.  All that could be heard was a faint clicking sound, it seemed more serious than a software problem. 

A friend suggested we give the drive/card to Payam Data Recovery and within hours Payam had reported that it was indeed a hardware problem (head crash) with the drive.  This is the most serious of all problems that can happen to one of these drives.  It was an important shoot, so after taking their advice, we instructed Payam to "operate" on the drive to try and recover the images. 

This is a very painstaking process, however in just over a week we received the fantastic news that all of our images were intact and usable.

Recently I had the misfortune to damage my Apple Powerbook by dragging it from the desk by the power supply. Apple technical support was able to replace the damaged hard drive and casing but not recover the data.  Apple (NextByte) recommended I send the hard disk to Payam for data recovery. Which I did.

In these days where hard disks are cheaper as never before and data amounts just explode I had a problem with my external hard drive attached to my Powerbook. Unfortunately I haven't unmounted the drive properly and turned the computer off while the drive was still connected. The next day when I wanted to use it again it couldn't be recognized of the system at all. Mac OSX wanted to initialise the drive and format it. 140GB of data seemed to be lost. Not that it would be the end of my life but still there has been many pictures from the digital camera and the whole digitalised CDs and DVDs of my collection on it. It would have taken weeks to get these things back. 
Even that I'm quite experienced with IT I wasn't able to get something back from the disk. Therefore I decided to find professional help and to get a quote how much it would cost to do the job. After some search through Google I found PAYAM Data Recovery.

It all started to go South when the motherboard and power supply both died on a clients Exchange Server box. While, naturally I hope to never have to have my data recovered ever again, I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. My son's USB memory stick failed.  He had two of his major school assignment tasks on the memory stick.  He had not backed them up.  They were due in the last week of the current school term which was only three weeks away.   Emotions were flowing thick and fast in our house that night as he realised he would now have to recreate his two projects from scratch to meet the due date.

I took the USB memory stick to work the following day and asked our IT department if there was anything that could be done to retrieve the data.  I was faced with several shaking heads and after the memory stick did not work in their computers they declared there was nothing that could be done to retrieve the data.

Instinct told me that there must be something that could be done.  So I googled 'data recovery' (thank god for google) and up popped a whole lot of sites.  With a bit more filtering I came up with Payam and another company in Melbourne.  The Payam website specifically mentioned that they could retrieve the data from a USB memory stick but naturally they would need to examine it first.  There was glimmer of hope that perhaps all was not lost.

A quick trip to North Ryde followed and I handed over the memory stick for evaluation.  Less than two hours later I was contacted with the news that the data was recoverable.  After agreeing to the terms of the recovery on that same day I had a copy of the files in my email.  The next day I received a DVD with the files on it by courier.  I sent my son an SMS advising I had the data and he was so happy.  All is now calm in our house.  My son now has three back-ups of everything he does - lesson learnt.

During a recent upgrade of my 'C' drive to a larger capacity a gremlin turned my backup 'F' hard drive into mush. Explorer said it was an "unformatted" drive. When my portable hard drive started making ominous clicking sounds instead of spinning up, I was pretty much resigned to the fact that I had lost over several irreplaceable DVD folders, Power Point Presentations, Photos, Writings and Archival material. This happened when I was visiting my family in Sydney for a few weeks. I was almost at the end of a lecture tour of a few South American countries and South Africa and only a programme in Singapore remained before returning to my base in India.

Without some of the items on the portable hard drive it was an extremely gloomy prospect for the Singapore seminar and the situation was desperate. I came to PAYAM following a failure of the hard drive in my HP notebook which I use in my office. The notebook is maintained under contract by HP, alongside many other PCs in my company. Naturally, I called HP Service for assistance and requested that they recover some critically important data on the failed hard drive. The HP service engineer made it very clear that all data was lost and not recoverable, and rushed to replace the failed hard drive with a new one.

Recently one of our clients systems was formatted and a new Windows installation partially completed when it was realised that he had not backed up his last 4 years of emails. I have a LACIE external drive as a back up to my laptop. Naturally my laptop is continually being disconnected from the drive most times just by unplugging... a big no no with XP.

When human error was responsible for the accidental format of a removable hard drive that contained 5 years worth of work & personal files, including websites, logos, artwork files, Image & Font libraries etc, first we cried, then we screamed, then we panicked as we thought all hope was lost, we then did some research on the internet and found a few different data recovery companies.

Initially PAYAM wasn’t our first choice and we sent the drive out to another company. That company only made the problem worse and insisted the drive was beyond recovery and all our data had been lost, not only that but they also wanted to charge us an arm and a leg.

A friend was experiencing problems with her PC and sought my assistance. She had been unable to boot to Windows and feared for her data which had not been backed-up. Significantly, this data included a large number of irreplaceable digital photographs and other files and documents which, due to a family tragedy, were of enormous personal value to her.

I attempted to recover the data by using a number of demo and freeware tools downloaded from the Internet. However, it soon became clear that the Windows installation was severely corrupted and that the chance of recovering any data was slim.

A genuine Good News Story. When my hard drive crashed, taking with it 6 months of work which I had not backed up, my life was over. I work for myself and attempt to save money and storage space by not printing out hard copies.  So there was nowhere I could retrieve this work from. My computer tech could not retrieve anything, and told me it was a hardware crash. I asked about disk doctors but he said they were prohibitively expensive and didn’t know any.   I googled and came up with two in Melbourne.  The first I spoke to said it would cost a big upfront fee to look at it, on a sliding scale depending how urgent it was…   if I was prepared to wait 14 days, it wasn’t too much, but I was so stressed at this stage I didn’t feel like a 2 week holiday to get my files back. Then the cost of retrieving the data was again on a sliding scale and very expensive.  
 
I then phoned Payam and spoke to Mark Gazzola. He told me if I could get the drive to him before 2.00 pm that day he could look at it and give me an answer that day, and NO CHARGE UNLESS HE COULD RECOVER DATA. He phoned back later in the day and told me it was all there and I could have it back within 24 hours.

Now, as to the charges.  Payam also has a sliding scale depending on what the problem is. If it’s software, extremely reasonable, if it’s hardware, a lot more, and if it requires taking into an isolation room and disassembling the hard drive, a lot more again.  My computer tech had told me it was hardware, so I insisted on this to Mark, expecting my costs to be in the mid range or high range.  But when I picked up my new hard drive with all my data on it next day (having lost about 28 hours down time in all), he told me it was a software problem so the charge was at the lower scale.  I think I paid less to get everything back in a day than it would have cost me to have the other company look at it 14 days.
 
So not only was I impressed by the fast service at a low price, with no risk since it was ‘no retrieval no charge’, I was even more impressed by Payam’s honesty. If they were unscrupulous, they could have charged me the full scale fee for a hardware problem and I would never have known the difference.

So I have now told all my friends about Payam and say thanks in my prayers. (I also back up each Saturday morning.)

After experiencing an uncommon electrical short in my hard drive, I was initially told by a computer shop that the hard drive in question had been totally 'fried' and wiped clean, and it would be impossible to recover any data as it simply wasn't there.

Seeking data recovery specialists to get another opinion, PAYAM was easy to find online, and they were extremely helpful in explaining the options available and the chances of recovering the data. However, I was still pleasantly surprised to find that they were able, in a relatively short time, to recover the entire contents of the hard drive and save them to DVD.

To polish off the service, Craig gave me a follow up call a day or so later, and spent some time explaining how to correctly transfer certain files I was having trouble with back from the DVD's, and also how to incorporate new data from my backup computer.

I’m not going to get into the ins and outs of who or where I brought my faulty external drive from, but suffice to say when it did not work after less than 3 weeks I was not impressed as I was looking at the prospect of losing years worth of data. I am a marine scientist currently working on a number of research projects, most of which are based on extensive field work and associated data collection. We are a company with a small workgroup network using network attached storage as a file server. Data is automatically backed up to a second disk on one of the PC’s, regularly copied to CD.
However one morning after earlier changes to the network configuration, the staff found that Windows was reporting the disk as unformatted.

On a trip across America, Germany, Italy then Croatia, my photos on my digital camera meant a lot to me. One of the drives in a RAID5 array of hard disks failed about a week ago.  The total drive contains around 1 terabyte of data that we rely upon for daily end-user interrogation, so we span the data across a RAID array to supposedly ensure that it is recoverable if one of the drive fails.  However, when we tried to rebuild the whole unit with a new drive, the RAID failed leaving us facing the loss of all that data… the only way to reconstruct it was to extract archive files, which would have been time consuming and may not have been complete or even fully retrievable.
When they tested the unit, LaCie (the manufacturer) said that the unit had failed completely and that, whilst they would replace the unit under warranty, they basically couldn’t help us as far as the data was concerned.  They did, however, recommend Payam Data Recovery.

When I called Payam everything was made very easy for me – they arranged collection of the drive unit from LaCie, and within 24 hours they had retrieved and restored all the data for us.  Within that 24 hour period I went from facing a 3 week task rebuilding databases from archives to having all the data readily available for end users to access.
In my opinion, the job Payam provided was exceptional.  It saved me massive amounts of time and effort and was worth every cent and more.

When my 200GB hard drive started reporting corrupt sectors and rebooted again and again, and, after I had used some cheap utility to further destroy the drive; converting it to FAT from HTFS and my tame professional computer geek gave up on recovering the data, I was pretty much desperate.

I stood to lose my BAS data, My Tax Return, my photos that I had worked on, my music etc. On spec I "googled" the "net". With a bit of searching I came across PAYAM Data Recovery and another Data Recovery firm.

Recently my RAID 1 HDD crashed and I lost all my data. My wife was furious because there was a lot of personal data, pictures, home videos etc., and these were unable to be replaced.

I enjoy taking photographs and get great pleasure and value in looking at those photographs in later years. I had purchased a new digital card for my camera prior to going on an overseas holiday. I had taken a large number of photos from three particularly significant places and with significant people when a message came up on my camera indicating the card had a fault. I have very high praise for the services Payam Data Recovery gave my LaCie 500Gb drive. My drive became unreadable by my Mac and it contained nearly 300Gb of data. As is always the case there were some files not backed up.

I received a quote from a city 'Disk Repair Service' and it seemed high. Payam data gave me a second much more reasonable quote. I was not in an urgent need for the data and preferred to give Payam enough time to do a good job and they did by recovering all the data and loading it onto a Terabyte Disk for me to transfer back onto my system at my leisure.

The hard drives in our RAID server “crashed” and our local computer technicians could only retrieve data off our backup tapes from as late as May but that still left us with six months of un retrieved data.  Our accounting technicians in Brisbane recommended PAYAM Data Recovery and advised that they should be able to retrieve all of the lost data.

One morning I went to turn on my computer and the computer would not start up my wife and I were very worried, she has all her work data on the hard drive and over 500 of our kids photos also she had just finished here tax.

So we got a new PC and used the old hard drive on the new computer as a slave which had all our data but we could not do a back up due to the new PC turning off, the PC did not go to Windows start up again due to a problem. The History, My hard drive had been playing up so I paid a computer professional to back up my hard drive onto DVDs.  I had over 6,000 photos as I had a digital camera since 2000. I had a lot of these on backup CDs but wanted them all onto a couple of DVDs. I got the DVDs back, checked the directories and checked some photos and all looked ok. It wasn't until I was looking for particular photos that I realised they weren't there even though it looked like the photos were on the DVDs as the file names were there. In the meantime we had one attempt at reformatting the hard drive. I thought I had lost about 6 months of photos. Irreplaceable as I have a 2.5 year old daughter and had taken some photos of a very much loved pet just before he passed away. Needless to say I thought I had done the right thing by having them backed up but unfortunately they hadn't been. I was completely distraught!

The Outcome

I Did some research on the web and found Payam. I chose them because they don't expect you to pay anything if they don't recover your files. I thought that was very fair and I had nothing to loose by using their service. They were really helpful. They spent considerable time trying to get my photos back and I am pleased to say I was lucky to have the lost files recovered and now have them on DVD. I did not have any warning of my hard disk failure. One morning I went to start my computer & all I got was the dreaded message of a hard disk failure.

I religiously do back ups of my important files, but due to space limitations of CD-RW discs it is impractical to copy all files.
At risk were my photos, music and Outlook files.
My computer guru loaded a new hard drive with the associated operating system, and then attempted to read from the old hard disc with an external USB2 connection.

No luck, he was unable to power up the hard disk which would have enabled data recovery.

My computer guru recommended PAYAM, so off I took my very dead hard disk with the expectation that I would be up for big biccies.

I was pleasantly surprised at the prompt service and reasonable cost of recovering my data. I had all my data that I required back on my computer within 4 days.

I have a relative here in Australia from overseas who accidentally formatted her SD card while trying to find out how many more photo’s she can fit onto the card. While doing this she pressed “Ok” to a message and then next thing she knew, the entire photo’s on the camera where gone. She had taken around 140 photos, of Sydney, Koala Park, and other tourist attractions around the place, she couldn’t sleep that night knowing she lost all the photos.
The next morning I assured her that the photos are still recoverable, but we just had to take it to professionals to retrieve them and pay a fair amount of many to do so. I got on the Internet and searched for “Data Recovery” on Google, the 3rd or 4th link was “PAYAM Data Recovery” and I decided to give them a call to find out what can be done. I called and spoke to an employee and explained what happened and if it’s possible to be recovered, they assured me that they will try to recover the data for me, if unsuccessful I wouldn’t have to pay a cent, but if successful it would only cost me $150!!!.

I was expecting well over $300 for data recovery. I came to the conclusion after the phone call that PAYAM was a good and respectable company.
I dropped off the SD card to PAYAM, two hours later they called me back, the conversation started with “We have some good news”, and that’s the only thing I wanted to hear. They were able to recover the photos and even photos from a previous format of the SD Card. I picked up the SD Card the next day. The entire photo’s turned out great, I couldn’t thank you more.

I run a successful IT business in the Sydney area. Recently I had a client who reported to me a complete boot failure of his laptop. On investigation I found the hard disk to be a fault and on removal found that the disk casing was physically twisted due to the method of carrying his laptop. I did not hold much hope but managed to recover a small portion of his data until the disk failed beyond my capabilities to restore.

Unfortunately most of the critical data was unrecoverable and since he is an Economics professor and the laptop had not been backed up since submission and marking this year’s exams and papers, we had to investigate alternatives.
I submitted the disk to PAYAM and they managed to recover the vast majority of the data off the disk that was so badly damaged that it took more that 4 weeks to run the complete process.

At all stages I had the option to stop the recovery and take what data was available but due to the irreplaceable nature of the data we decided to let it run it’s course.
