My WDEX4100 4 Bay NAS had a RAID failure, so all our data, including family photos, was not readable. It was a disaster as some things where not backed up as yet on another drive. I thought we would lose some data for sure, and a chance to lose all of it, but the Team at Payam extracted the data methodically, and then sent me a list of what they had extracted. In the end, they had recovered all of the data, and we could not be happier. You could say relieved. Hopefully, I don't have this happen again, but would 100% recommend Payam Data Recovery!

Disaster struck at its worst time. One of my RAID5 drives had SMART warnings. Supposed to be an easy hot-swap of the drive. It was all good until the rebuild crashed and a 2nd drive crashed. Worst possible scenario - 2 bad drives in RAID5 and limited backups !! 10TB of data possibly all lost !! My work data was backed up but many personal family photos and videos were possibly lost. All just before Christmas (holiday time of year many offices are shut). Requested quote and details from Payam Recovery. All seemed fair and I understood no guarantees in these situations. Diagnosis was quick - 1 bad drive head and another with many bad lost sectors. Advised by Payam best effort to recover as much as possible. Finances tight right now so nο rush for these as I had to take the least expensive option - but within just a couple of weeks I received the best email possible. Drives were resurrected and 90% of my data was recovered !! 450,000+ files !! Received all my drives back and from the backup Payam team provided, I have now restored everything. I have slowly gone through the other 10% of data (marked as damaged) - file by file. Going through these files individually I found many files still intact and working !! Even better news !! The Payam team deserve every accolade here. They answered my calls and we're professional from start to finish. Thank you so much !! Being in the IT industry myself - I will pass on the name of Payam Recovery services to anyone who needs data recovery - as most highly recommended !!

Sensational service, speed and a full raid recovery quicker than expected. All handled so professionally and the staff were happy to handle any technical and in-depth questions I had around the recovery. I cannot recommend Payam highly enough from catastrophic server failure to saving your family’s photos this is the team for any job large or small

I couldn’t turn my laptop on, or reboot it, and therefore I couldn’t access data or files. There’s more: I didn’t have any backup, and I was afraid I would lose all the work done in one year of my PhD. The reason was a hardware failure with the logic board. Within a few days, the Payam Data Recovery company helped me access and save all my data. They were reliable, fast and super efficient. I would highly recommend them!

Returning client. I’ve always used PAYAM services whenever my family needs an emergency data recovery and their team are very prompt and professional. I knew each step of the recovery process what was required for the best chances of success by their lab team, received regular communication on the progress of my job ticket and immediate contact once the HDD data recovery was completed. Following that I was offered the chance to test the recovery myself and as extra precaution they kept a copy of the recovered data for 7 days following the job being completed. I will happily use PAYAM again if the worst-case scenario happens again.

I had burnt all 4 of my hard drives by a faulty power supply! Can you imagine turning on the computer and not seeing either of my two raid arrays! But Payam to the rescue! I Googled two companies on that morning, one turned out to be closing down the Sydney office, but luckily the second was Payam. I had my quote available the same day and data restored several days later. Then guess what? I manage to ruin the data again while trying to rebuild the raid array. Luckily, Payam keeps the restored data for couple of weeks and I had my data rewritten to the hard drive again. Now all is back, as if nothing happened! Thank you! P. S. As I had drives in two raid arrays burnt, I had to have two jobs, one per disk. You may see this same review again for the second job.

Brilliant service, quicker then expected, and very well priced. I had an external hard drive that had about 20 years of photos and it crashed just I started transferring the contents to a NAS. Tens of thousands of images. Payam recovered every image and delivered the results on a new drive which are now in duplicate on my new NAS. I highly recommend Payam.

I sent a broken RAID array on behalf of one of my clients and they were very happy to have their data all recovered.

Losing data you thought was on an external HDD = bad Dealing with the fact that you may never get your data back = worse Dealing with Payam = PRICELESS!! These guys are the best in the trade. They are extra-courteous, sincere, honest and best of all they provide TOP value for money. I lost data on a 1TB external disk drive that had two 500GB disks in it. I didn't realise the product had hardware RAID, like an idiot I did not enable it and simply backed up data with no RAID!!! Payam, recovered **all** my data, could not be happier - thanks a lot guys

Albert and the team at Payam managed to retrieve both the Mac files from my Mac, AND the Windows files from the virtual machine (Parallels) side of my Mac, after a nasty encounter between my laptop and a beverage. The laptop died but the hard drive survived. The team were fast, professional, sympathetic, and effective. The cost was affordable and absolutely worth it.

My Hard drive has 400Gb, the first attempt to recover my data was not succussed as the hard drive was too badly damaged and the reader heads deteriorated. I contacted head office and agreed to send the hard drive to clean room data recovery lab with Emergency. Data recovery work completed successfully and Payam team delivered exceptional service in a timely manner with high professionalism.

Contacted the team about recovery of data from a failed RAID Array, extremely helpful over the phone. Organised Airfreight to have the drives shipped from interstate, they were straight onto the recovery. Let me know every step on what was happening and where the recovery process was up to. We purchased two drives for the recovered data to be sent back which had to be done in a few hours as we had organised pickup and next flight return of the data. Extremely helpful, nothing was too hard even with our specific freight & time constraints. Cannot recommend the team and service highly enough.

When my RAID array failed I was recommended to go straight to Payam. I must say that I experienced some of the best customer service I have ever had. I was most impressed by their flexibility to help me out. Also they did all they could to recover my data, of which 100% was recovered. I wish I knew more people with broken hard drives to recommend to him but in the event it does happen, I will ensure they contact Payam. Bravo.

My company (SME) had a major server crash, which meant all of our data on both server HDD's was corrupted or lost. We also found to our surprise and horror that our backups hadn't been functioning properly since a previous server issue late last year- so we only had project and company data up to that point and nothing from Novenmber to March. I Googled 'data recovery' and went with the reviews I read. I contacted the Payam team who were very professional and efficient from the outset. They gave me a straightforward and honest assessment about the chances of recovering the data, but I always felt they would do everything possible to recover it. Thankfully they were able to recover everything for us...sigh of relief....and we have also established a new back-up policy/test process!! I would have no hesitation in recommending Payam for this service- very impressed.

I have been using Payam for probably a decade now. They have never been unable to recover data for me. Their skills and customer service are exemplary. Most recent was a SSD that would not detect in bios, previously I have had data recovered from a failed raid 5 array, a fire damaged drive and some other failed hard disks I recommend their service to everybody.

I contacted several different data recovery companies when my Raid 0 array failed. Payam responded the quickest, and not only that, provided me with a range of price options. Their lowest cost option was very competitive and quoted an expected completion time of 4 weeks. I chose their lowest cost option as I was not in any hurry, but as it turned out, Payam recovered 100% of my data in under 10 days anyway. Communication from Payam was excellent, and I was regularly kept updated of their progress and expected completion time. Their staff was friendly and professional at all times. I found Payam to be very knowledgeable, experienced, and above all, flexible and very customer centric. I have no reservations in recommending them to anyone.

Our 4 drive business storage device had been unsuccessfully backing up for over 6 months (without our knowledge). Upon a second drive failing we finally became aware of the issue. With the failure of the second drive, access to all server information was unavailable. With six months of valuable information no longer available we put our trust and hopes in Payam Data Recovery. We invested in a quick turnaround and were not disappointed. We are now back on track with all information recovered. Thank you for saving our bacon!!! Nick

Payam Data Recovery provides a great service when important data has been lost. I've used them a number of times while repairing PCs and servers for people. On each occasion Payam have recovered the data of damaged hard drives. If needed, they have worked through the night and returned data quickly. While it is not a service that you 'want' to use, if you 'need' data recovery, then Payam will help.

Payam data recovery has saved my business. I went overseas and when I got back my Nas double hard drives were not working anymore, both of them. I took the hard drives, still in warranty, to the shop where I bought them, but they told me that they could not do anything, than I found Payam data recovery in Perth. In only 3 days I got all my data back up and the staff gave me tips on what to do to prevent it from happening again. Since than I have recommended them to some of my friends and they always came back very happy.

QNAP problems we recover

These are the QNAP faults IT teams bring us most often. In most of them the data is still on the drives.

RAID group or storage pool shows Inactive, Unmounted, Error or Not active.
Volume or pool missing after a QTS firmware update.
RAID 5 with two failed drives, or RAID 6 with three or more failing drives.
SSD cache drives failed and the storage pool will not mount.
Thick and thin volumes, and snapshots, on a damaged storage pool.
QuTS hero ZFS pools that will not import.
The NAS keeps crashing: folders appear, but copying any file fails.
A drive passes SMART but will not read, which software tools miss.
Clicking or undetected drives that need a head swap.
Encrypted volumes, where you still have the password or key.

What not to do with a failed QNAP

What happens in the first hour decides how much we can recover. Please:

  • Do not run Rebuild, Recover or a file system check in Storage and Snapshots while more than one drive shows warnings.
  • Do not remove or recreate the storage pool, initialise the NAS, or reset it to factory settings.
  • Do not install the firmware update again, and do not remove the SSD cache drives on their own.
  • Do not take the drives out and put them back in a different order, and do not move them into another unit to see if it helps.
  • Do not run recovery software, chkdsk or a file system check on the original drives. We clone every drive first and work from the clones.
  • Do not keep switching it on to check. A failing drive gets worse every time it runs.

How to send us the drives

We do not need the enclosure, the power supply or the drive trays. Just the drives:

  1. Shut the unit down, or switch it off if it no longer responds. Every hour a failing drive runs can make it worse.
  2. Label every drive with its bay or slot number before you take it out: bay 1, bay 2 and so on. A strip of masking tape on each drive is enough.
  3. Send all of the drives, faulty and healthy, including SSD cache drives and any drive that was taken out earlier. Label those too, so we know which is which.
  4. Write down what happened: the messages on screen, the RAID level if you know it, what has already been tried, and which drive failed first.
  5. If the volume or shared folders are encrypted, send the password or key file details with the job. We need them to read the data.
  6. Pack each drive in an anti-static bag with padding, fill out the RAID job form, and bring or post the drives to any of our labs and offices.
  7. If the drives are still under warranty, get written approval from the manufacturer or retailer first, because we may need to open a drive.

Your recovered files come back on an external drive. You can supply your own, or buy one from us when you approve the quote.

Urgent assessment and Emergency service

Free assessment. We test every drive and email you a written quote within 1 to 2 days. The quote shows the price and turnaround for Economy, Priority and Emergency, any attempt fee, and your chances of success. Nothing is charged until you approve it.

Urgent assessment, $500. If the business is down, ask for an urgent RAID and NAS assessment. You get a written quote within 2 to 3 hours.

Emergency service. When you approve Emergency, work starts straight away, and our data recovery engineers keep working after hours and on weekends until the job is done. At our Sydney CBD, Rhodes NSW, Melbourne and Brisbane labs, work can start the same day once the urgent assessment is done and you approve the quote. From Adelaide, Perth and Auckland, the drives first travel to our Rhodes NSW lab by overnight courier. We never promise a finish time, but your quote gives you a realistic one. See emergency data recovery for how it works.

After hours. Outside business hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm), only the Emergency service is available. Call 0404 872 926. Staff may need 1 to 2 hours’ notice to come in, and a non-refundable emergency assessment fee of $500 applies to RAID and NAS jobs ($150 for other devices). The job then goes ahead on the Emergency service. Please use this number for genuine emergencies only. If you cannot bring the drives in yourself, you can send them by Uber or a same-day courier at your own cost.

How much does QNAP recovery cost?

Most RAID and NAS recoveries cost $2,500 to $6,500 on Economy. Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST. The full price list is on our data recovery cost page. These are the rows that come up most often for a QNAP NAS:

  • Basic backup from healthy drives: $350 Economy, $550 Priority, $1,400 Emergency, no attempt fee.
  • One failed drive, a RAID rebuild only, or file system corruption: $2,500 Economy, $3,500 Priority, $10,000 Emergency.
  • Two failed drives: $4,500 Economy, $6,500 Priority, $18,000 Emergency.
  • More than two failed drives: $6,500 Economy, $9,000 Priority, $18,000 Emergency.

Apart from a basic backup, RAID and NAS jobs carry a $500 attempt fee. It is part of the quoted price, not an extra, and if nothing is recovered it is the only cost. Very large or complex cases may have a custom price, quoted after the free assessment. We do not charge by the hour.

Economy usually takes 3 to 4 weeks, Priority 1 to 3 weeks and Emergency 2 to 6 days, with no guarantee. A basic backup from healthy drives is faster: 5 to 10 days on Economy and 1 to 2 days on Emergency. The success rate is the same on all three services; only the speed changes.

Where the work is done

RAID and NAS recovery is done at our own labs in Sydney CBD, Rhodes NSW, Melbourne and Brisbane. A drive that needs a head swap is opened in one of the two professional ISO 5 laminar flow cabinets at our Rhodes lab, and goes there by overnight courier at our cost. Adelaide, Perth and Auckland have secure drop-off offices, and drives from there go to Rhodes by overnight courier. Nothing is outsourced, and we do not offer an on-site service.

We have been recovering data in Australia since 1998, with over 300,000 successful recoveries. Supply your own NDA and our director, Payam Toloo, will sign it. IT support companies that send a job for their client can do it through our partnership program.

Case studies: see how we do it

Real QNAP jobs from our labs, each with the full write-up and a video. More on our case studies page.

QNAP RAID 5 with two failed drives

A crashing QNAP with four WD Green drives: one with bad sectors and one with a head crash. Recovery software could not read the array, so it was rebuilt by hand.

QNAP RAID 5 another lab called impossible

A lab overseas said this 4-drive QNAP could not be recovered, and one drive had been opened before. We recovered 10 years of family photos and documents in 2 weeks.

QNAP RAID 6 after a firmware update

Eight 10TB drives and four SSDs. After a firmware update the RAID 6 would not rebuild, five drives had SMART warnings and two SSDs were dead. Cloned over 5 days, all data recovered.

4-drive QNAP RAID 6 in 24 hours

Three drives looked healthy and SMART did not flag the fourth, but it would not open. We cloned the weak drive on a DeepSpar imager and recovered everything in 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases, yes. It usually means one or more drives have failed or dropped out, or the file system is damaged. Power it off, label the drives by bay and send all of them. We clone each drive and rebuild the RAID from the clones in a read-only way, so nothing is written to your originals. Recovery is never guaranteed, and your free quote tells you your chances.

Do not run the update again or recreate the pool. Send us all of the drives, including any SSDs. In one QNAP case, drives became inaccessible after a firmware update, five of eight drives had SMART warnings and two SSDs were dead. We cloned the drives over 5 days and recovered all of the data.

Usually not. We need all but one drive readable. We repair the most recently failed drive temporarily, for example with a head swap, clone it and leave the other out. Recovery is only impossible when two drives have failed and both cannot be repaired, which is rare.

Yes. QNAP storage pools add their own layers on top of the RAID, and general tools often fail on them. When the tools fail, we work out the drive order and layout by hand, as we did on a QNAP RAID 5 with two failed drives.

Yes. In most cases we can rebuild the ZFS file system and extract the files and folders, using specialised tools and our own software.

Yes. Send every drive in the unit, including the SSDs, each labelled with its slot. Cached data may only exist on the SSDs.

No. We only need the drives. We do not repair NAS units, so keep the enclosure or ask QNAP about a repair or replacement.

Most RAID and NAS recoveries cost $2,500 to $6,500 on Economy. A basic backup from healthy drives is $350. One failed drive is $2,500 on Economy, two failed drives $4,500 and more than two $6,500. Priority and Emergency are faster and cost more. Apart from a basic backup there is a $500 attempt fee, which is part of the price, not an extra. The assessment and written quote are free. All prices are on our data recovery cost page.

The free assessment and written quote take 1 to 2 days. An urgent assessment costs $500 and gives you a written quote within 2 to 3 hours. On Emergency, work starts as soon as you approve the quote and usually takes 2 to 6 days, with no guarantee. At our Sydney CBD, Rhodes NSW, Melbourne and Brisbane labs, work can start the same day.

Yes, on the Emergency service only. Call 0404 872 926. Staff may need 1 to 2 hours’ notice to come in, and a non-refundable emergency assessment fee of $500 applies to RAID and NAS jobs ($150 for other devices). The job then goes ahead on the Emergency service. During business hours, Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm, you can choose Economy, Priority or Emergency after the quote.

Yes. Supply your own NDA and our director, Payam Toloo, will sign it. Give us your company name and ABN when you book in, and we will put them on your tax invoice.
