From a One-Man Operation to Australia’s Leading Data Recovery Specialists

In 1998, at just 18 years old, Payam Toloo founded Payam Data Recovery as a one-man business, operating from the basement of his parents’ underground car park. A full-time university student juggling part-time work and a home-based IT support business, Payam’s life took a sudden turn when his personal hard drive failed—without a backup. Everything was lost.

Like many of the customers we assist today, Payam was devastated. At the time, only two companies in Australia offered professional data recovery services, with costs ranging from $6,000 to $18,000—an expense he simply could not afford.

Determined to find a solution, Payam embarked on a mission to learn how to recover data himself. He purchased 300 broken hard drives from local computer shops and spent six months methodically disassembling, studying, and reassembling them. Through trial and error, he learned the intricacies of hard drive mechanics—understanding how they failed, how to repair them, and ultimately, how to recover data without causing further damage.

After months of relentless practice and many mistakes, Payam succeeded in his ultimate challenge: recovering his own lost data. This breakthrough sparked a passion to help others facing the same crisis, leading him to establish a professional data recovery service.
